NIO is a photographic series shot from 2019-2023 in Rome, IT.
The work chronicles the accidental beauty created by unconscious hands and uncaring elements. Each image is a small narrative, showing the collective evidence of a unique excavation as the original image in the pubic space is covered over by the next and then torn away to reveal its predecessor. The visual consumption of these images is slowly disconnected from the original intention of display by a process of public mark-making. In this way the images become a kind of metaphor for Rome itself, who’s face is simply the constant act of pealing back to show another layer beneath.

There exists in each of these images a poem. An ode to non-decrement as a means for unique loveliness. Each is inextricably a part of the environment which created it, and reflects back to the viewer that we, as a collective, are able to transform our environments in unconscious and visually striking ways that often go unnoticed. To me this is a powerful and compelling flavor of creation which often lies counter to my need for individual control in image craft. Noi is meant to be a display of what I find both difficult and crushing beautiful about sharing an urban space participating in the great canvas that is Rome.
